We are Lanka ry, a subject association for exchange, minor, master’s degree and PhD level students of LAGIC (JYU’s Master’s degree Language, Globalization, and Intercultural Communication) and all affiliated students at JYU. We connect our students to each other and to the university community and represent them at JYU’s larger-scale meetings. We also organize events aimed at socializing and strengthening the relationships that form within the LAGIC group.

The meaning behind the subject association’s name is three-fold:

  1. “Lanka” is short for “language and culture”
  2. “Lanka” means thread in Finnish, this symbolises a thread that weaves through and connects LAGIC students
  3. Many mythodologies, including (but not limited to) Finnish, Swedish, Greek, Chinese, and Japanese have a lot of meanings surrounding the idea of the “red thread”. This mythology refers to ideas of “belonging”, “destiny”, and “continuity” to name a few. “Lanka” students come from many cultural backgrounds and so this shared mythology is yet another way how we are brought together and find some common ground.
